How do you break news to someone which will make them angry at you...?

If it is at all possible, go to the family thing first. Then leave early to be with your friends. You said it is a sleepover. It should still be going on when the family thing is winding down. The best parts do not start anyway at sleepovers till late. That should solve everything, as long as you have a way to leave the family thing.
