When a book hits the floor, what happens to the kinetic energy?

In a bookstore, there are lots of books. For each book, some work (against gravity) is already done to put the book on a bookshelf. If a book falls off the shelf, this potential energy is turned into kinetic energy. (Hint: we know that energy is conserved, so it must go somewhere...)
